Approaching v1.0: What Changes¶
There’s a point in every project where the nature of the work changes.
Early on, everything is fluid. You’re exploring ideas, testing constraints, throwing things away. Speed matters more than structure because you’re still trying to understand what the system even is.
Approaching v1.0 is different.
At that point, the question is no longer can this work? It becomes can this be relied on? That shift ends up touching almost every decision you make.
The focus moves from building to stabilizing¶
Before v1.0, adding features feels like progress. After a while, it’s mostly just noise.
The work shifts toward:
- defining boundaries
- removing ambiguity
- making behavior explicit
- deciding what the system will not do
You spend less time adding and more time tightening what already exists.
Implicit behavior becomes a liability¶
Early versions get away with "it works if you know how it works."
That doesn’t survive contact with anyone else.
Approaching v1.0 means:
- no hidden assumptions
- no surprising side effects
- no reliance on tribal knowledge
In practice, if a system behaves differently than a user expects, it usually ends up being a design problem, not something you can really paper over with documentation later.
Failure handling stops being optional¶
Early on, failure paths are easy to ignore.
"We’ll handle that later" works right up until it doesn’t.
Now you need real answers:
- what happens when this breaks
- what guarantees still hold
- what data can be trusted
- what recovery actually looks like
If those aren’t clearly defined, the system usually isn’t as ready as you want to think it is.
Interfaces harden¶
Before v1.0, you can change anything.
After v1.0, every change has a cost.
That forces you to define:
- what is stable
- what is internal
- what is allowed to evolve
You’re not freezing the system. You’re trying to decide where change is safe and where it isn’t.
You start designing for futures you don’t fully know¶
This is where things get uncomfortable.
You’re no longer designing just for what exists today. You’re designing for things you haven’t seen yet:
- workflows you don’t know about
- integrations you don’t control
- edge cases that only show up at scale
This shows up in:
- protocol shape
- API boundaries
- file formats
- extension points
Once those are exposed and in use, they stop being easy to change.
Backward compatibility becomes a constraint¶
After v1.0, you don’t just move forward. You carry everything that came before with you.
That means:
- behavior becomes a contract
- users build workflows on top of your decisions
- shortcuts turn into long-term constraints
If you miss something early, you don’t just add it later.
You get to choose between:
- breaking compatibility
- introducing versioning complexity
- rewriting large parts of the system
None of those are especially fun.
A concrete example¶
In one of my current projects, I’m not even near v1.0 and I’m already dealing with post-1.0 problems.
Things like:
- does a feature belong in 1.0 or should it be deferred
- how do new file types get introduced without breaking existing archives
- how do I design a chain-of-custody model so it can be added later without rewriting core logic
These aren’t really implementation questions. They’re boundary questions.
If the format and contracts aren’t shaped correctly now, adding those capabilities later means:
- redesigning the format
- breaking compatibility
- or carrying the mistake forward forever
So even before v1.0, you end up defining:
- what the system promises
- what it leaves open
- how it can evolve without invalidating what already exists
You won’t get it perfect. You just try to avoid backing yourself into a corner.
Documentation stops being optional¶
This is where documentation stops being something you add later.
If you wait until after v1.0:
- you will miss edge cases
- you will describe what you thought it did, not what it actually does
- you will end up reading your own code to reconstruct intent
That’s usually not a great use of time.
Approaching v1.0, documentation becomes part of the design process:
- contracts are written as they are decided
- behavior is defined, not inferred
- invariants are captured while they’re still fresh
Good documentation at this stage isn’t just for users. It’s also how you keep the system honest.
Observability becomes part of the product¶
Debugging through guesswork doesn’t scale.
At this stage:
- the system should explain itself
- state should be inspectable
- failures should be diagnosable without reverse engineering
If you need a debugger just to understand basic behavior, something is probably missing.
The bar changes¶
Before v1.0, "it works" is enough.
After v1.0, it needs to behave predictably under stress and continue to behave as it evolves.
That’s a higher bar because at v1.0, you’re no longer building only for yourself. You’re building something other people may depend on and build on top of.
Closing¶
v1.0 isn’t the finish line.
It’s the point where the system starts to stop being an experiment and becomes something other people may treat as a dependency.
The work doesn’t get easier.
It just gets less forgiving.
